A 24-hour gym in Camberwell is giving people the chance to get fit in a friendly and welcoming environment.
Snap Fitness opened its Camberwell location in 2012 and has since expanded its floor space to offer members a more spacious gym.
Snap Fitness Camberwell Club Manager Trent Crockett said members had access to cardio equipment, free weights, resistance machines, personal trainers, virtual group classes and an altitude training room.
The gym offers 24-hour access, 7 days per week, giving members the flexibility to work out at times that suit them.
“Being a 24/7 gym, we aim to make training available and accessible at any time. Members are not bound to restricted opening hours,” Crockett said.
Snap Fitness Camberwell offers a couple of unique features including an altitude training room and virtual group fitness classes.
The gym’s altitude training room allows people to work out in a space with less oxygen, which forces them to train harder.
Crockett said the altitude training facility is often used when people are training for a marathon, endurance events, or to hike the Kokoda Trail or Mount Everest’s Base Camp.
“Training in the altitude room is also ideal for anyone who is looking to push themselves a bit harder or for those who simply want to boost their overall fitness,” he said.
Crockett said training at high altitude teaches your body to utilise oxygen more efficiently, enhances performance, improves overall wellbeing and increases metabolic rate.
The gym’s ‘Fitness On Demand’ room gives members access to group-style fitness without the need for a live instructor or timetabled classes.
The virtual fitness program is easy to use – members simply select the class they wish to undertake via a touchscreen and the workout room lowers a projector screen where the video class will show.
Members can choose from high and low intensity classes including Body Pump, yoga, kettlebell workouts, Zumba and boxing. Class times range from under 20 minutes to over 40 minutes.
The benefits of a personal trainer
Snap Fitness Camberwell has an experienced team of personal trainers to help members achieve specific fitness goals, from losing weight to boosting strength and improving flexibility.
Personal training is available for individuals or small groups, allowing people to stay motivated and work out in a style that suits them.
Personal trainers can offer nutritional advice for those seeking a holistic approach to health and fitness.
“People can really tailor their workouts in personal training sessions and ensure that their work outs are time efficient and that they can reach their goals,” Crockett said.
“When people start personal training their focus shifts and they can push through at a level that they couldn’t before.”
Crockett said personal training was ideal for those who might lack focus in their workouts, as the sessions promote discipline and help people to avoid distractions like playing on their mobile phone.
Crockett said a trainer can also help people to improve their technique and avoid injury.
“People are often unaware of how they move when they work out and a trainer can pick up on minor changes that are required. An example could be that your ankles roll in when you do squats but you don’t realise this until a trainer points it out and helps you to correct it,” he said.
Crockett said part of the appeal of Snap Fitness Camberwell was its welcoming environment.
“Our aim is to create a space that is non-intimidating, no matter what point you’re at in your training,” he said.
“When it comes to free weights, for instance, a lot of people may avoid it out of fear of getting too big. And with cardio, someone may not have done running since they were in school and so getting on the treadmill can be really intimidating.”
Crockett said the trainers do their best to help members find a work out that they can manage and enjoy.
“One of our biggest challenges is getting people to move in a way that they haven’t for many years. But there’s always somewhere easy to start and build on from there,” he said.
“We want people to walk in and instantly relate to other members, and feel like they can easily approach our staff. We’re all about creating a friendly atmosphere where people can feel comfortable while they work out.”
