Camberwell on Canvas 2022 art trail highlights local shops and artists

Camberwell On Canvas 2022

Camberwell Junction’s popular art trail returns this year and invites the community to participate and win some great prizes.

Running from October 18 – November 14, Camberwell on Canvas showcases the talent of local artists in shop windows around Burke Hill.

The artworks will feature diverse styles and mediums, including everything from oil to water colour, charcoal, pencil and more.

Members of the public can get involved by entering two competitions. The first competition requires participants to find clues in designated artworks to solve a puzzle, while the other competition allows people to vote for their favourite pieces of art. Both competitions give participants the chance to win great prizes (see full details below on how to enter).

The art trail, which is now in its eleventh year, was developed by the Camberwell Traders’ Association as a community event to support the businesses around Burke Hill while highlighting local artists.

The artists that contribute works to the trail include professionals and amateurs, and some of their pieces will be available for sale.

Camberwell Junction Traders Association Manager Kerry Daly said she was pleased Camberwell on Canvas could return to its original format this year.

“After pivoting to a virtual art trail in recent years to accommodate pandemic restrictions, we are thrilled to bring back our much-loved community art show in its physical form,” she said.

“Locals and visitors to Camberwell Junction can again enjoy viewing artworks in person, which will be displayed in shop windows around Burke Hill, the northern end of our shopping precinct.”

Ms Daly said the art trail not only gives artists a chance to work creatively with local traders, it also invites the public to discover the range of stores and restaurants in a historic part of Camberwell Junction precinct.

“This is a really unique art show in that we invite the artist to ‘match’ their artwork to the store it will be displayed in. Of course, this allows for a broad interpretation but the artists love the idea and it means we are judging them on what is a best match, not the best art. It is less intimidating for the artist and presents another challenge for the viewer,” she said.

“It is truly an art show with the community at its heart and we hope everyone enjoys it.”
