Local employers needed for student work placements

Call for Structured Workplace Learning placements

Inner Eastern Local Learning and Employment Network is seeking to engage employers (particularly in the retail, beauty, and hospitality industries) who may be interested in hosting Year 11 or 12 students for a work placement.

The students will be completing their relevant VET (Vocational Education Training) studies.

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placements provide an opportunity for young people who are studying a VET course to undertake industry placements in their chosen field of study.

From an employer perspective, SWL has much in common with traditional Work Experience, with the main difference being that SWL students are in Year 11 or 12 (not Year 10) and enrolled in an industry-aligned course.

SWL placements usually total 40 hours for 5 – 10 days within a year, which can be either set up as a week block or one day a week – whatever suits the employer.

The Structured Workplace Learning Program is funded by the Victorian State Government. Employers pay the students $5 per day and all insurances are covered.

There are a wide range of industries required for the program, including retail, beauty services, construction, sport and recreation and hospitality.

Becoming a host employer is a great opportunity for a business/ organisation to:

  • participate in the education, career development and training of young people in their community
  • identify young people with potential for their industry and/or use the program as a recruitment tool and have an extra pair of hands available for $5 per day (insurances covered)
  • strengthen links with the community and raise their business profile
  • talk to students about their industry, its career paths and future directions
  • promote the attitudes and skills they want in their workforce
  • increase the supervisory, training and mentoring skills of their staff.
