How to prevent crime in your store
March 6, 2025

How to prevent shop theft, and what to do if there has been a crime in your store.
Key crime prevention tips:
- Good customer service is a deterrent – greet customers when they enter the store.
- Watch for suspicious behaviour – notice customers who appear nervous, distracted, and those who remain in the store for long periods of time.
- Secure cash handling and stock control – never leave cash registers unattended, and install security tags on items and barriers at the exits.
- Secure the store – install sensors, alarms and CCTV.
- Consider the store layout – ensure the store is well-lit, and that staff can see over shelves and racks.
In the event of a crime, it’s important to report it. Here’s what you should do:
- In case of an emergency (e.g. violence, theft in progress, or immediate danger):
Call 000 immediately and provide clear details about the incident. If safe to do so, observe and note descriptions of suspects, vehicles, or any other relevant details. Avoid direct confrontation unless necessary for safety. - For non-emergency crimes (e.g. shoplifting, vandalism, fraud):
Report the incident to Victoria Police via the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or online at police.vic.gov.au. Preserve any evidence, such as CCTV footage, witness statements, or transaction records. Notify store management and document the
incident for future reference. - Every incident matters – report all crimes
Even if an incident seems minor, it’s still important to report it. Small crimes can be linked to larger patterns of offending, and reporting helps police track criminal activity and can influence the allocation of resources. - Share information with fellow traders
