Face coverings mandatory for Melbourne

Face coverings mandatory for Melbourne

Due to ongoing concerns regarding COVID-19 outbreaks, the state government has announced that it will be mandatory for people in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire to wear a face covering.

To give people time to purchase a face covering, this rule will be enforced as of 11.59pm on Wednesday, July 22. But for those who can, please start wearing your face covering immediately. The fine for not wearing a face covering will be $200.

All people over the age of 12 living and working in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will be required to wear a face covering when leaving home for one of the four permitted reasons.

There are exemptions to wearing a face covering including eating and drinking, for strenuous exercise such as running or jogging, for people with disabilities or for deaf people who need to lip read for communication.

Retail staff must wear a face covering that covers the nose and mouth. Retail staff should also remind customers to wear a face covering within their store and should refuse entry to customers not wearing one. If you experience any difficulties, please contact the local police.
