Traffic is flowing through Burke Rd and into Camberwell again after the first level crossing removal in Glen Iris has been completed.

Motorists wanting to use Burke Rd to travel to Camberwell’s shopping precinct can now do so with ease and efficiency.

Camberwell Centre Association Manager Kerry Daly said people who previously travelled via Burke Rd in Glen Iris may have felt reluctant to take the route to Camberwell due to delays and interruptions during level crossing removal works.

“Now that Burke Rd has reopened and traffic is flowing again, the path to Camberwell shopping precinct is quick and hassle-free,” Ms Daly said.

“I encourage all visitors to Camberwell to make the most of this improved route to get to our vibrant shopping precinct.”

According to the Level Crossing Removal Authority, the boom gates at Burke Rd were removed in mid-January and the road has since reopened.

Motorists and pedestrians are now experiencing significantly safer and faster travel through this area, and trams are using the newly built super stop.

The rail line has been lowered below Burke Rd and three tram stops have been consolidated into one centre island platform stop on the road, allowing for easy access to Gardiner Station.

The Burke Rd intersection was one of Victoria’s most congested and dangerous level crossings, with more than 25,000 vehicles, 150 trains, and 180 trams travelling through it every day.
