Camberwell On Canvas 2018 – Highlights

Camberwell’s much-loved community art trail returns to the shopping precinct for its seventh year, but this time with a twist.

For the 2018 Camberwell on Canvas art trail, visitors can join a guided tour, complete with ukulele tunes, called ‘Sip and See’.

The tour will take place at 10am and 11.30am on Saturday, November 10 – visitors can meet at Euphoria Cafe and Wellness Centre to collect their free coffee and from there, will be led around the art trail by event coordinator Colin Freckleton (pictured, below).

Mr Freckleton will also share the stories behind the works on the art trail.

Camberwell on Canvas, which runs from November 8 – 30, brings shop windows on Burke Hill to life with works by local artists showcasing a range of creative styles.

Artists have been assigned a specific shop in the precinct and have created a piece of work to show their interpretation of the theme ‘art to match a store’.

The Camberwell Centre Association has created this community event to highlight the unique businesses on Burke Hill and to celebrate the talent of local artists.

The association provides the canvases, and some of the works are available for sale during the event.

Artists are encouraged to experiment with different styles or mediums, and works range from oil to water colour, acrylic paints, charcoal, pencil, and collage.

Camberwell Centre Association manager Kerry Daly said Camberwell on Canvas was a wonderful way to celebrate and enjoy an art trail with a difference.

“It’s always impressive to see how the artists interpret the stores in Camberwell. It gives onlookers a chance to see a unique perspective of the shopping precinct,” she said.

Ms Daly said Camberwell on Canvas gave artists of all skill levels the opportunity to exhibit their work.

“It’s a chance for artists to work creatively with local shopkeepers, while promoting their work,” she said.

The art trail also gives shoppers and traders the chance to enjoy Camberwell’s shop windows in a unique way, Ms Daly said.

“It gives people a chance to visit this historic part of the precinct and discover the variety of restaurants, beauty salons and specialty stores they may not know about,” she said.

Members of the public can vote for their favourite art works and prizes will be awarded to the three most popular pieces. Other awards will be issued by traders or interested parties.
