Meet Trent Crockett of Snap Fitness in Camberwell

A 24-hour gym in Camberwell is giving people the chance to get fit in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Snap Fitness opened its Camberwell location in 2012 and has since expanded its floor space to offer members a more spacious gym.

Snap Fitness Camberwell Club Manager Trent Crockett said members had access to cardio equipment, free weights, resistance machines, personal trainers, virtual group classes and an altitude training room.

The gym offers 24-hour access, 7 days per week, giving members the flexibility to work out at times that suit them.

“Being a 24/7 gym, we aim to make training available and accessible at any time. Members are not bound to restricted opening hours,” Crockett said.

Unique features

Snap Fitness Camberwell offers a couple of unique features including an altitude training room and virtual group fitness classes.

The gym’s altitude training room allows people to work out in a space with less oxygen, which forces them to train harder.

Crockett said the altitude training facility is often used when people are training for a marathon, endurance events, or to hike the Kokoda Trail or Mount Everest’s Base Camp.

“Training in the altitude room is also ideal for anyone who is looking to push themselves a bit harder or for those who simply want to boost their overall fitness,” he said.

Crockett said training at high altitude teaches your body to utilise oxygen more efficiently, enhances performance, improves overall wellbeing and increases metabolic rate.

The gym’s ‘Fitness On Demand’ room gives members access to group-style fitness without the need for a live instructor or timetabled classes.

The virtual fitness program is easy to use – members simply select the class they wish to undertake via a touchscreen and the workout room lowers a projector screen where the video class will show.

Members can choose from high and low intensity classes including Body Pump, yoga, kettlebell workouts, Zumba and boxing. Class times range from under 20 minutes to over 40 minutes.

The benefits of a personal trainer

Snap Fitness Camberwell has an experienced team of personal trainers to help members achieve specific fitness goals, from losing weight to boosting strength and improving flexibility.

Personal training is available for individuals or small groups, allowing people to stay motivated and work out in a style that suits them.

Personal trainers can offer nutritional advice for those seeking a holistic approach to health and fitness.

“People can really tailor their workouts in personal training sessions and ensure that their work outs are time efficient and that they can reach their goals,” Crockett said.

“When people start personal training their focus shifts and they can push through at a level that they couldn’t before.”

Crockett said personal training was ideal for those who might lack focus in their workouts, as the sessions promote discipline and help people to avoid distractions like playing on their mobile phone.

Crockett said a trainer can also help people to improve their technique and avoid injury.

“People are often unaware of how they move when they work out and a trainer can pick up on minor changes that are required. An example could be that your ankles roll in when you do squats but you don’t realise this until a trainer points it out and helps you to correct it,” he said.

Friendly atmosphere

Crockett said part of the appeal of Snap Fitness Camberwell was its welcoming environment.

“Our aim is to create a space that is non-intimidating, no matter what point you’re at in your training,” he said.

“When it comes to free weights, for instance, a lot of people may avoid it out of fear of getting too big. And with cardio, someone may not have done running since they were in school and so getting on the treadmill can be really intimidating.”

Crockett said the trainers do their best to help members find a work out that they can manage and enjoy.

“One of our biggest challenges is getting people to move in a way that they haven’t for many years. But there’s always somewhere easy to start and build on from there,” he said.

“We want people to walk in and instantly relate to other members, and feel like they can easily approach our staff. We’re all about creating a friendly atmosphere where people can feel comfortable while they work out.”

Meet a trader: Yossi Hayoon of Sprinnt Indoor Cycling Studio, Camberwell

An indoor cycling studio in Camberwell is helping people to get fitter, stronger and healthier.

Sprinnt, located in Riversdale Rd, only opened in December 2014 but has quickly built a community of spin class members.

CEO and instructor Yossi Hayoon ditched life as a corporate consultant in favour of being more active and focusing on his health.

Originally from Israel, Hayoon moved to Australia about 13 years ago and has been working in the fitness industry for 11 years.

Hayoon decided to start his own business after noticing a gap in the market for indoor cycling classes.

“The fitness business is too generic and I wanted to create something different. I believe people will appreciate my unique classes, professional service and personal attention,” he said.

Hayoon believes in practicing what you preach, and uses this approach to keep members coming back week after week.

“First of all, you need to set an example – you need to be fit, you need to look fit and you need to be knowledgeable.

“For me, it’s a lifestyle. I like being fit and active. It’s the way I want to live my life.

“And no matter what kind of day I’ve had, once I sit on the bike everything changes.”

A new design

Several months of planning went into creating the design of the physical studio and the format of the spin classes, Hayoon said.

“There is a lot of work that has gone into designing the class. There is a methodology behind the design of the class,” he said.

The spin studio is designed in a way to encourage inclusive activity, with about 35 bikes set up in a U-shape and the instructor at the front.

With other riders positioned all around you, it’s easy for participants to feel like they’re in the challenge together, Hayoon said.

“The design of the studio was intentional, to make the class feel inclusive. You feel like you are in it together with everyone else who is riding. You can feel the energy,” he said.

The class starts with a solid warm up before increasing the intensity for a consistent period of time. The intensity level is then dropped slightly with a focus on maintaining that level before moving into a cool down phase.

“The class has been designed in a way to allow participants to reach optimal fitness and get a full, overall workout,” Hayoon said.

“It takes riders through different intensities, terrains, and resistance.”

Creating a community

Part of Hayoon’s intention when starting Sprinnt was to build a community of likeminded people.

At the end of each class, members are encouraged to stick around for a cup of tea or coffee, some fresh fruit and a chat.

“I felt that the community aspect of spinning classes was missing elsewhere and I wanted to create something different,” Hayoon said.

“I think people want to belong to a group. And that community experience gives them another aspect of motivation to come and exercise and be inspired and learn from one another.

“It’s amazing; people are changing their lives here.”

The cycling studio also offers occasional themed classes as a way to change the normal routine and give members a new challenge.

Examples of recent themed classes include a 90-minute endurance session and a class that had live musicians playing tunes that members cycled to.

“With the themed classes, it’s a chance to move away from the conventional spin class and have something different,” Hayoon said.

“It also gives members the chance to get involved as we encourage them to share their ideas and talents for a themed class. It’s another way we are getting the community involved.”

A spinning class for everyone

Sprinnt is leading the charge in offering an indoor cycling class that is suitable for all ages and fitness abilities.

“Participants in our classes range from 10 years old through to 63. They are riding together and encouraging each other even though they are different ages and have different fitness levels,” Hayoon said.

The class is designed so that participants can make it as hard as they can manage, so people of varying fitness levels or abilities can still participate.

It’s a very encouraging way to exercise because you can start at a point and work your way up, Hayoon said.

“We have had so many people come here who were afraid of this exercise or who haven’t exercised for many years. They couldn’t manage the first class but after two or three months they’ve managed a 90-minute endurance class. They’re feeling stronger, fitter and happier.”

Hayoon said although the classes are intense, they were designed to push participants in a safe way.

“You’ll be surprised how quickly your body will adjust with each class. Your body will accept the change,” he said.

Lowdown on Eating Seasonally this Spring

It’s super boring trying to keep up to the latest in diet trends; low carb, no carb, ALL OF THE CARBS.

Honestly, who has time? There is growing support for a refreshingly simple approach to healthy eating. Eat locally and eat seasonally. It’s good for the environment, it’s good for your body and it’s good for your bank balance.

The cost, in both an economic and environmental sense of transporting foods halfway around the globe is difficult to justify given the abundance of fresh produce available on our doorstep.

Australia is teeming with an incredible array of fresh fruits and vegetables and springtime is the perfect excuse to get on board the food train. It’s time to move away from the hearty soups and stews of winter and bring some lightness to your palate by taking advantage of the seasons new arrivals.

Blood oranges make their annual return to the spotlight, available for a limited time from during September and October so be sure to pick up a bag of these delicious treats while you can. Their zesty tang is fabulous however you chose to enjoy it, in salads, freshly juiced or peeled and devoured whole, you can’t go wrong, watch out though, they’re wildly addictive and the season is over in a flash (don’t say we didn’t warn you).

Spring is also time for asparagus to step out of the shadows (or to be plucked from its earthy bed, whichever visual you’d prefer). Lightly fried or steamed, green or white, asparagus is always fresh and easy. It’s the perfect side to almost anything you can think to match it with. Eggs and hollandaise for breakfast, tossed through a rocket and feta salad for lunch or drizzled in freshly squeezed lime juice (also in season) to liven up your pan seared salmon come the evening. The choices are endless and if you’re anything like me, you’ll be giggling every time you visit the bathroom.

There’s a whole host of other goodies vying for your attention at your local grocer right now, so if you’re at a loss as to what to eat as the weather warms, relax and take your queues from mother nature, trust me, she knows where it’s at.
