The Lowdown on Eating Seasonally: Spring 2014

Lowdown on Eating Seasonally this Spring

It’s super boring trying to keep up to the latest in diet trends; low carb, no carb, ALL OF THE CARBS.

Honestly, who has time? There is growing support for a refreshingly simple approach to healthy eating. Eat locally and eat seasonally. It’s good for the environment, it’s good for your body and it’s good for your bank balance.

The cost, in both an economic and environmental sense of transporting foods halfway around the globe is difficult to justify given the abundance of fresh produce available on our doorstep.

Australia is teeming with an incredible array of fresh fruits and vegetables and springtime is the perfect excuse to get on board the food train. It’s time to move away from the hearty soups and stews of winter and bring some lightness to your palate by taking advantage of the seasons new arrivals.

Blood oranges make their annual return to the spotlight, available for a limited time from during September and October so be sure to pick up a bag of these delicious treats while you can. Their zesty tang is fabulous however you chose to enjoy it, in salads, freshly juiced or peeled and devoured whole, you can’t go wrong, watch out though, they’re wildly addictive and the season is over in a flash (don’t say we didn’t warn you).

Spring is also time for asparagus to step out of the shadows (or to be plucked from its earthy bed, whichever visual you’d prefer). Lightly fried or steamed, green or white, asparagus is always fresh and easy. It’s the perfect side to almost anything you can think to match it with. Eggs and hollandaise for breakfast, tossed through a rocket and feta salad for lunch or drizzled in freshly squeezed lime juice (also in season) to liven up your pan seared salmon come the evening. The choices are endless and if you’re anything like me, you’ll be giggling every time you visit the bathroom.

There’s a whole host of other goodies vying for your attention at your local grocer right now, so if you’re at a loss as to what to eat as the weather warms, relax and take your queues from mother nature, trust me, she knows where it’s at.
