Meet Kristie Gillardeau of Barolo Trattoria in Camberwell

A cosy trattoria in Camberwell offers a delightful respite from the busy world with culinary gold in the form of classic, comforting Italian cuisine with a French influence.

Barolo opened in buzzing Burke Rd in 2017 and owner Kristie Gillardeau said it was the perfect choice of location.

“Camberwell has a good atmosphere and community feel and a buzzing restaurant scene on Burke Rd,” Ms Gillardeau said.

Having lived in the area for a long time, it was, she said, “naturally, an easy choice”.

Open from 11.30am until late from Tuesday to Friday, and from 5pm on Saturday, it’s a great spot for a long lunch, early afternoon drink or a delicious dinner.

For those who enjoy a happy hour and the chance to enjoy a plate of antipasti, be sure to pop in between 3pm and 6pm from Tuesday to Friday.

A cosy dining experience

Ms Gillardeau describes Barolo as a local neighbourhood restaurant that is “friendly, casual and welcoming”.

“With the dim-lit lights, fairy lights, concrete walls and indoor greenery, at night it creates a cosy, warm, intimate dining experience,” she said.

“We offer a large range of small plates, large plates and pizzas that are perfect for sharing over a glass or bottle of wine.”

The food on offer at Barolo is Italian cuisine with a little touch of France here and there.

The taste of France is influenced by her father Francois Gillardeau who was a top maître d’hôtel (head waiter) in Paris before he moved to Australia.

“Here, he worked in top hotels before opening his own restaurants. I have grown up in the hospitality industry working alongside Dad and Mum in their restaurants, before finally deciding to open my own,” Ms Gillardeau said.

All the floor and kitchen staff have worked together in other venues before joining forces to open Barolo in Camberwell.

“Our head chef Joel first started working with Dad when he was 16 and now, 15 years later, he is still working alongside us. Everyone has a great bond, which I think is why we are continually growing the business as we all work extremely well together,” Ms Gillardeau said.

“It is great coming into work every day and loving the staff you work with. Our staff are always friendly and welcoming.”

And with this family-friendly philosophy, it probably comes as no surprise to learn that after service ends, all the staff sit down and share a meal and wine together.

“We talk about the night and mingle,” Ms Gillardeau said.

A celebration of food

The beef and shiraz ragu and the house-made gnocchi are among Barolo’s most popular dishes.

“Our hand-stretched pizzas, baked brie, sticky pork belly and antipasto board are all perfect for sharing and bringing the table together over great food and company,” Ms Gillardeau said.

The restaurant’s upstairs private dining room is perfect for functions and Barolo is currently offering a bonus $500 bar tab for Friday and Saturday night exclusive bookings of the function room.

Be sure to look out for specials like the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day bottomless Peronis for lunch and dinner bookings.

There are also pizza and wine, steak and wine and pasta and wine nights from $20 to $25.

All of this adds to the restaurant’s ethos of being a “local neighbourhood gem” run by a big, happy family.

“We are welcoming, friendly and fun, serving quality food with a great, extensive wine list,” Ms Gillardeau said.

“We love seeing customers come together over food and wine.”
