Camberwell On Canvas 2017 – Highlights

Camberwell On Canvas

Back for its sixth year running, Camberwell shopping precinct becomes a walking art gallery once again with the Camberwell on Canvas art show 2017.

From November 15 – 30, Camberwell shop windows will become a stunning display of the creative talents of local artists, with a wide range of skills and styles on view.

Artists have been allocated a specific store in the precinct and will create a masterpiece that depicts their interpretation of this year’s theme: Art to match a store.

The Camberwell Centre Association has created this community event to help promote the unique businesses up on ‘Burke Hill’ and provide a forum for art lovers.

The association provides the canvases, and some artist’s work is also for sale during the event.

Artists are encouraged to use whichever style or mediums they prefer, from oil to water colour, acrylic paints, charcoal, pencil, and collage.

The art works also vary in styles, from classic to abstract, cubist to surreal.

Camberwell Centre Association manager Kerry Daly said Camberwell on Canvas was a beautiful way to celebrate and enjoy an art show with a difference.

“Not only are the art works visually exciting but it is so interesting to see how the artists interpret the stores. It makes the exhibition more engaging as you wander from shop window to shop window,” she said.

Ms Daly said Camberwell on Canvas gave artists of all skill levels the opportunity to put their work out there and communicate creatively within a community setting.

“It’s an opportunity for artists to work creatively with local shopkeepers, while publicising their work in the process,” she said.

“As creative and colourful new artworks are displayed in shop windows around the Burke Hill area, the art show also gives shoppers and traders a unique way to appreciate Camberwell’s shop windows.”

Depending on the artist’s wishes, some of the art works are available for sale to the public.

Members of the public can vote for their favourite art works and prizes will be awarded to the top three most popular pieces. Other awards will be issued by traders or interested parties.

Voters can also go in the running to win a $50 Camberwell shopping voucher.
