Meet the Author Alan Brough

Charlie didn’t want Mrs Cyclopolos to explode. He just wanted a paper round…

Charlie and the War Against the Grannies is full of Alan’s trademark wit and humour and is suitable for children of all ages. Imaginative, original and very funny, Charlie and the War Against the Grannies will also appeal to adults and older fans of Alan’s work.
Alan Brough was born in New Zealand and has been performing as long as he can remember. After various jobs, including as a library shelf stacker and an orange juice squeezer, he took up acting full-time — becoming, for a time, New Zealand’s most famous transvestite.

Alan has worked in film, television, on stage and radio as a writer, director, actor, broadcaster and stand-up comedian. He has appeared in five feature films and in numerous TV shows, and is probably best known for his role as team captain on ABC TV’s much-loved musical quiz show, Spicks and Specks. He has also made guest appearances on ABC TV’s Kath and Kim and has written for the mockumentary TV series The Games.

Alan has appeared as a senator, a nun, a military officer and a morbidly obese man on Network Ten’s comedy series Thank God You’re Here, and played to over 70 000 people on a tour of the country in The Spicks and Spec-tacular, a live version of the ABC TV music game show Spicks and Specks. He has also hosted the Sunday Morning show on ABC Radio Victoria and Melbourne.

In 2012 Alan launched ‘Armchair Pollies’, a live satirical politics quiz show at The Bella Union in Melbourne. He also narrated the documentaries Wildlife at the Zoo and Abba – Bang a Boomerang and in 2013 he toured the country as the villain Baron Bomburst in the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
